MGT October Focus: Language

There are many aspects in Language and I have decided to focus on the Reading (Mother Goose Time development skills 11, 13)

Every month the children receive their own little reader that goes along with the monthly theme.  They also learn three new words with these books.  This year we also get one set of the word arrows (see picture) that the children place on the page when they see the word in the story.
My little guys love to read, and learn new words.  We read and reread these little book and few times a day so when they go home at the end of the week they can confidently read it to their families.  Yes, we do use our fingers to point to each words as we read.

This is how we read our books.
1st - We look at all the pictures in the booklet and guess at what is happening.
2nd - We point out the new words in our book.
3rd - We do a repeat after me reading with finger pointing.
4th and 5th - Whole group read

At least in my case, my preschoolers are very excited about reading and can't wait until they read all by themselves.  I am always catching them with books and reading stories to each other or toys.   After we read we talk about the book and try to personalize it for ourselves.  This month we talked about how we feel and deal with people who ruin our toys.  Also how we take care of our and our friends things.

We also receive a class book for the month that we read through out the month.  The children love the colorful pictures and in the case of "Johnny" repeated words that they can repeat and then read after a few readings.

Orchard - Field Trip

What better way to learn a topic than a FIELD TRIP.... here we go to an apple orchard.
At the end of Mother Goose Time's  In the Orchard Unit, we took a field trip to an apple orchard to pick apples. We had a lot of fun going up an down the lanes picking apples that we never heard of before!! They were delicious too!! I wish I had some pictures of us eating them. Because there were so many varieties that we wanted to try, I had to limit the amount of each kind to be pick so we wouldn't over fill the bag. This was good practice for E to do some counting as he picked.
From this unit, E now wants to plant apple, plum, orange, lemon and peach trees!!

MGT - Texture Match Up

Our Mother Goose Time science discovery today is texture discovery.  Every object, including food have their own feel and texture.  First, we discussed what texture is, since this is a new word: the feel and appearance of an object.
I put scraps of material in a bag and one at a time the boys had to pull a piece out and describe how it felt in their hands. Was it soft, hard, rough or smooth? Was it cool or warm? Silk is cool. Flannel is warm.
We also warmed up our bean bags again and discribed how it.  For snack we practiced more feeling for textures. Carrots are wet, smooth but rough, and cool to the touch.

Dance and Beats With Porcupines

It's no big mystery that my family and  my preschool children love the Dance 'N Beats from Mother Goose Time.
This past week we learned about animals that can be found in an orchard.  We learned about porcupines and raccoons.
This was a favorite activity of some of my children. I drew a capital "P" on a piece of paper and while listening to the song "porcupine polka," they punched holes around the "p" with a toothpick. When they held it up to the light they can see the light shining through the holes they were so excited to see that. This activity was great for practicing beat, since I noticed most of the children were punching holes with the beat.  Also this was a great activity on letter writing and shape formation.

MGT - Yummy Bananas

One of Mr. I's favorite snacks is a banana.  So today was a great learning day for him.
Mother Goose Time has a craft for almost every day of the month. I love the fact that I only have to supply limited items for these crafts.  We receive a directions sheets, and all items need to complete the craft.  Today was a great fine motor skills crafts.  Mr. Independent  worked on making his own banana.  Working with starch noodles is fairly new to us, and we love it.  Wet the ends and stick them together.  Awesome.  We started by examining a real banana, size shape, feel.  Then we made some, Mr Independent decided to stick the two together to make one big banana.

During math we used our awesome looking fruit manipulative s  so solve the math questions.  Math is so much fun with cool objects.

Honesty: The Monthly Character Trait

On of the many advantages I have found with the Mother Goose Time preschool curriculum is the character trait focus.  Each month we focus and incorporate a trait in our day.  This month is Honesty
We read the story of George Washington and the Cherry Tree and then talked about what honesty was and why we need to tell the truth.  After I was sure the children understood what it meant to be honest we stuck our Honesty Bee on our display board. Each child also gets a badge to wear home.  We talk about and practice honesty every day this month.

MGT In the Orchard

This week we started a new unit with our Mother Goose Time.  We learned all about the parts of trees. Most of this week we have been outside discovering and exploring the different parts of trees in our yard. We saw the roots, trunk, branches, leaves.

One thing I have to say as a teacher and parent of some of the students, is how I love that some subjects have been covered a few months ago but we are learning about them again, a little differently this time.  My children feel like they are very smart (they are very bright children)  because they have remembered things about plants parts and are now putting the same information towards tress.

Nature Art:  In this fun activity, for the day we were learning about leaves, we took some white material scraps, found different times of leaves and flowers from around our yard and placed them between the cloth.  The children had a fun time smashing them with the hammer.  Palm leaves we found don't leak green when pounded.  Orange tree leaves worked great.  Along with flower petals.  We liked the designer the colors made.
